The subject

Tuscany, in Violet

A Tuscan scene seen through a single colour — violet. An archway, a tower, a cypress, all washed in shades of mauve and plum: one of my ’Sensation’ sheets, where a place is filtered through a mood.

The subject is Montepulciano — a gate and a corner of the old town — but drawn as a feeling rather than a record. I took the whole scene into the violets: the warm stone, the deep shadows, the last of the evening light, all pulled toward one end of the spectrum.

It is an experiment in limiting the palette. When you allow yourself only violet, you quickly discover how many violets there are.

The first of a set of three.

One colour for a whole town — I wanted to see how much of Tuscany would survive being painted entirely in violet.

Ink keeps the arch, the tower and the cypress legible; the violet does everything else — light, shade and distance alike.

It turns a familiar Tuscan corner into something dusk-lit and strange, which was the whole idea.
