Houses with No Safety Belts

Three bright, tipsy houses leaning together along a street — red, yellow and blue. This is from my ’No Safety Belts’ sheets: paintings made for the pure joy of colour, with the brakes off.

Sometimes the point is simply to play. No monument, no view to be faithful to — just three invented houses, each a flat block of primary colour, chimneys askew, windows glowing, drawn with a thick confident ink line and filled in the way a child would, boldly and over the edges.

The series name says it all: no safety belts. No careful greys, no architecture to respect — only red, yellow, blue and black, and the fun of putting them next to each other.

It is the most carefree thing I make, and that is exactly its purpose.

No place, no rules, no safety belts — just three houses and the three loudest colours in the box.

Thick black ink first, then flat blocks of pure colour; the charm is in the wonkiness, so I left it in.

After a day of careful drawing, this is the sort of thing that reminds you why you picked up a brush at all.
